Two Arson Fires at a Springfield Apartment Complex

Early Tuesday morning residents of 35 High Street could see and smell smoke filling the hallways of the first and second floor.

Springfield firefighters put the blaze out quickly and sent everyone back inside. But the tenants barely had time to get back to sleep.

As soon as Diana Lopez put her daughters to bed another fire alarm sounded sending them back outside into the cold.

Fire Information Officer Dennis Leger says, "At 1:51am we got a call back for a larger fire in the rear hallway of the third floor."

Diana Lopez says, "This is the second time, they did it once and then they did it twice so it's scary for me and my daughter to be sleeping now at night."

The Springfield Arson and Bomb Squad is investigating. Their arson dog alerted them to an accelerate which was used to set a fire in front of this apartment door. The later fire started on the third floor, when
someone lit a bag of trash and left it there to burn.

Leger says, "It's a very dangerous situation here when you have a 16 unit building like this with 100 people or more living in it and somebody is doing that at 1:30am in the morning when everybody is asleep it's a very disturbing thing that's going on here."

Lopez says the neighborhood is normally quiet and she's never felt unsafe until now.

Lopez says, "I'm worried about it and now I don't know what to do and tonight I don't know how I'm going to sleep because probably it will happen again."
