Infant Dies After Street Racing Crash

By Lesley Tanner

Well wishes, teddy bears and thoughts of love sit undelivered, meant for a baby who never made it home.

"He was a beautiful baby, a gift from God," says Kevin's father, Eldin Santiago.

Kevin Santiago was critically injured last week in a car accident on Rocus Street. Speaking through a translator, his father describes the heart wrenching decision the family made Tuesday to take the baby off life support, four days before he would have celebrated his first birthday.

"He was pronounced with multiple, irreversible brain damage," says Eldin. "And they gave the family the choice of whether or not to keep him on life support."

The accident has left Eldin mourning the loss of his son, and his uncle. In a tragic coincidence, it was the baby's great uncle that was driving the car responsible for the crash. Freddy Fuentes was speeding in a car tuned for street racing, when he lost control and crashed into a parked car. Inside was the baby, his mother and Fuentes's girlfriend. Though he is described as a racing enthusiast, family members say Fuentes was also adamant about safety.

"He always said a race car was never to be run on the street," says Santiago. "He would always take them out on the track."

Eldin says he knows Fuentes loved his great nephew, and if given the chance to talk to him about the accident, he would be at a loss for words.

"I wouldn't blame him," says Santiago. "But I wouldn't know what to say."

Kevin will be laid to rest later this week in Puerto Rico, and as part of the funeral arrangements, on Saturday his family will celebrate what would have been his first birthday.
