Racing on Vegetable Oil

Rev your engines and get ready to race, that's what one Western Mass resident is heading down to Mexico to do but what's so unique is what he and his team are putting in their tank and where they're getting the fuel from.

A 1959 Mercedes 190 Diesel might not be a car you see on the road everyday and for one particular one in West Springfield what you find in the trunk is definitely not common.

Michael Devine, SolShine Alternatives, says "We're running on vegetable oil."

And racing it 2,000 miles in heat across Mexico.

Devine says, "We're the only team who have ever raced with alternative fuel period."

West Springfield-Native Michael Devine and a friend recently founded a non-profit company called SolShine Alternative to educate people about alternative energy.

Devine says, "I talk to people every single day who have no idea this is even possible."

How they're spreading the word is by going far. Devine and his team will be racing the car for 7 days through Mexico using the power of vegetable oil.

Devine says, "We race everyday from 8 am to 4 pm The hotels we stay at we'll be using their vegetable oil so it's almost like the oil they're using to cook our food, we'll be using to do the race."

Their vegetable oil is free so they have a leg up on 150 other cars from around the world entered in race. And with a 15 gallon tank in the trunk they'll be able to go about 500 miles but what about winning?

Devine says, "For the race itself this car is no means a speedster. Our goal this year is to finish the race."

The start flag for the 2,000 mile race waves on October 24th and it continues until the 30th. But Devine's journey does not stop with the checkered flag. He will be driving around the country filming a documentary and educating people about alternative fuels.
