Lottery Mystery in Easthampton

By Matt DeLucia

In a town where some say it is hard to keep a secret, someone is sitting on more than a million dollars.

Mass. Lottery officials said a MegaBucks ticket worth $1.4 Million was sold at Valley Farms last month. But, there is no sign in the window advertising a big winner. The store will get a $14,000, or one percent commission for selling the ticket, but even with that good news, the store manager had no comment Tuesday.

Joanne Bonnayer works as a hair stylist in the same Northampton Road shopping center as Valley Farms. She is surprised everything is so hush hush.

"It is a small town, and we do tend to find out things pretty fast, so I'm surprised we haven't found out yet," Bonnayer said.

Even lottery officials are keeping quiet about it. They would only say the ticket was turned in Wednesday by a representative for "Autumn Drive Trust" based in Easthampton. A lottery official said it is uncommon for a trust to claim a prize instead of a person, but it allows the winner stay out of the spotlight.

"I think that's a good idea because it's not every day you win a million dollars, and you'd probably need some professional help," said Peter Davies, an Easthampton real estate agent.

But what about the name of the trust? If it refers to the Autumn Drive in Easthampton, it is mostly vacant lots and homes still under construction. Neighbors could shed little light on the million dollar mystery.

"It would have to be a coalition of homeowners on Autumn Drive, I would think," said Roy Baker, who lives near Autumn Drive. "I don't know anybody over there, so I couldn't tell you."

Despite the fact that the winner, or winners of the lottery ticket are still unknown, it is certainly generating a lot of buzz in downtown Easthampton.

"I like the idea that they're keeping kind of private, so that people who they haven't seen or talked to in years don't come out of the woodwork looking for you," Bonnayer said.

Others remain skeptical of what seems like an interesting plan to keep quiet.

"There must be very many people involved. It just seems strange," said Ceil Boistol of Hadley:

But, no matter how strange it may seem, if the goal is to remain anonymous, many say they are doing a pretty good job.
