Firefighter Arrested on Rape Charges

By Lesley Tanner

"They were trying to get in because the defendant had raped their 14 year old child," says Assistant District Attorney Corrine Rock.

The alleged rape occurred Saturday night after the 14 year old boy spent a day on Rivera's boat with Rivera, and his 19 year old housemate. Once asleep, the victim says Rivera came into his room and made it impossible for him to fight back.

"His hands were cuffed behind him, his clothing was removed and he was raped both anally and orally," says Rock.

Rivera stood shaking his head as the details were read aloud in court. An 11 year veteran of the Springfield Fire Department, Rivera was injured in August when a roof collapsed during a fire on Windemere Street. Rivera returned to work after his wounds healed, and his lawyer says Rivera has become a victim once again.

"Threats were made against his home, damage was done to his home, threats were made against his personal safety and threats were made against his life," says Defense Attorney Mark Hopkins.

Rivera's family surrounded him in the courtroom, outraged by the allegations, but none were more shocked than Rivera's neighbors.

"I've seen a lot of the neighborhood kids riding their bikes, standing in front of the house, going in and out of the house," says Jose Mendez. "I was stunned to know this was in my neighborhood, something like that happened."

Stunned feelings that may get worse in the coming days.

"There is indication that there may be other victims who will come forward in the near future," says Rock.

Rivera is being held on 250,000 dollars bail. The Fire Commissioner has met with the city's law department. Rivera is currently considered absent without leave from the Springfield Fire Department, and is not receiving pay.
