Pedestrian Safety At UMass Amherst

By Liz Tufts

Trying to make your way through UMass Amherst's campus takes a lot of patience. Just ask Juniors, Keela Shatzkin, and Molly Hall. They admit getting to class can get dangerous.

"I feel like people don't stop and speed up and don't care about pedestrians, " says Molly Hall.

But by law drivers must stop or face a 200 dollar fine. They also have to abide by flashing signs and yield at all times when coming to a crosswalk. But UMass Police say pedestrians also need to do their part too, by being attentive when stepping on to the white lines.

"Both drivers and pedestrians need to be cautious. Whether they are on their phone, IPod, or anything they have to realize what they are doing, " says UMass Police Sgt. David Black.

In the past few years, crossing guards have been hired to handle the steady traffic on specific streets, and they offer a pedestrian safety course to students. They also add more police details when more foot traffic ends up on campus.

It's still unclear what happened yesterday on Massachusetts Avenue. UMass Police say 25-year-old Li Cai was walking in the crosswalk when she was hit by a car, sending her 20-feet into the air.

Officials say a the glare from the setting sun may have been a factor in the accident. Either way students say you need to be cautious at all times. The accident is still under investigation.
