Residents Fed Up With Toxic Site

On a windy day, dozens of Springfield residents who live near the Former Gemini Corporation site in the South End, hope contaminated soil wont be blown into their homes and yards.

"The dust is running around, plastic gets blown off soil, the soil gets blown around air, I find in in my street and property, " says concerned resident Ed Madaloni.

The three acre lot was once the site of textile manufacturing plant. The building was knocked down five years ago, but piles of contaminated soil have been sitting under ripped tarps since March. On Thursday, State Representative Cheryl Coakley-Rivera toured the site. She saw the broken down chain link fence, allowing anyone in, a potential health hazard for children.

"This is their backyard, their children and grandchildren are around this daily, " stresses Coakley-Rivera.

Coakley-Rivera says in 2005 the city was awarded 200-thousand dollars to have the debris removed. Stamford Wrecking Company was hired to do it, but didn't finish the job. She thinks the City should step in.

"The city has had ample time now to seek out contractor or take legal action, my opinion it's their responsibility and liability to remove it, " adds Coakley-Rivera.

But Mayor Domenic Sarno says the city has taken action. And he says if Stamford Wrecking doesn't take away to soil by October 6th, he'll pursue legal action.
