Tractor Trailer Crashes Into Belchertown Home

By Matthew Campbell

One look at Sheila Bukowski's house and you might think it was hit by a tornado.

"A tractor trailer hit it. That's a first," Bukowski says.

Late Wednesday afternoon, 10 tons of truck came barreling right through her porch, nearly missing the living room. Two people were inside at the time. They were Shelia's daughter and her aunt.

"She's still nervous, she's still upset. I'm still upset," Bukowski says.

It's understandable. Even though this home has been on the corner of Franklin Street and Depot Road for 100 years, Wednesday's wreck was the worst ever.

"Cars come in the yard. One barely hit the porch and another came within inches of this one," Bukowski says.

Speed has always been a problem here on Franklin Street. This corner would be taken a lot too quickly and sometimes folks would have to speed right on through, missing their turn, but never did the residents here think a tractor trailer would be planted right in their front yard.

"They could have come straight through and taken the whole house out. She was coming down the staircase," Shelia says about her daughter.

The posted speed limit is 20, but taking a look at the tire marks and the half foot deep impressions left in the ground, it appears the driver wasn't even close to that. But even after being a swerve away from homelessness, Shelia has no plans to move.

"It's been in the family all these years, going from one generation to generation to generation," she says.

The condition of the lone driver has yet to be released and Belchertown police say no charges have been filed against him or her.
