Will Haleigh Poutre Take The Stand?

By Liz Tufts

Haleigh Poutre's case captivated people across the state and around the country. Three years ago, the 14 year old Westfield teen was beaten into a coma, allegedly at hands of her stepfather. Her injuries were so severe, the State won court permission to end her life support when doctors said she had no chance of recovery, but her will to survive saved her life.

"That is the strongest little girl you will ever meet, " says Allison Avrett.

Allison Avrett, Haleigh's biological mother, hasn't seen her daughter in two years, but says her health has improved immensely. So much in fact, she's still being considered to take the stand against her alleged abuser, Jason Strickland. Avrett wants to her to testify, but only if she's ready.

"If it will hurt her no, do I think everyone should know, yes but not at her expense, " adds Avrett.

Prosecutors in the case suddenly withdrew their decision to have Haleigh take the stand saying it could be harmful to her. A judge gave the defense two weeks to decide if they will have her testify. Avrett says having her out of the courtroom will have a major impact on the case.

"If you don't have victims side then things wont be told, " says Avrett.

Either way she says even if Haleigh's not there, her story has already helped so many kids just like her.

"As long as something good comes out if it, then maybe it's not all in vain, and maybe it will help someone else in the future," says Avrett.

Jason Strickland is set to go to trial October 29th.
