A man has died after crashing a vehicle police say he was testing it for a race. Springfield Police said Tuesday the man was driving on Rocus Street, near Page Blvd. at approximately 70 m.p.h. when he lost control and crashed into a parked car. The crash happened at around 6 p.m. Tuesday. Many people were in the heavily industrial area at the time of the crash and came upon the scene moments after the impact.

"I came down the street... and I saw the car flipped over and another car smashed into the truck," said Philip McCarthy, who works across the street from the two-car accident.

Philip McCarthy is one of many who came upon the accident Tuesday evening. Springfield Fire Department spokesperson Dennis Leger said an arson investigator was first on the scene and called for rescue teams.

The accident happened in front of Two Brothers Leasing. One of the workers there said he heard a loud crash. Others described the aftermath.

"People were ejected out of their cars. A little baby was being carried, and they looked pretty bad," said Eddie Santa, a Springfield resident who drove by the accident just seconds after the crash.

Fire officials said the male driver was ejected out of his car. Leger said he had no pulse and was not breathing. Emergency crews performed CPR before taking him to Baystate Medical Center, where he was pronounced dead.

A female driver and an infant in the parked car were rushed to Mercy Medical Center. Police said they both sustained serious injuries.

Those who work nearby say they are shocked to see such a high-speed crash on Rocus Street.

"It's very hard to speed down here most of the day, even at night - there's trucks and trailers up and down the streets all night long," McCarthy said.

Springfield Police said the vehicle that caused the crash was unregistered and being test-driven for use in racing. Police are not releasing the names of the victims at this time until family is notified.
