Proposed Financial Incentive To Recycle

Recycling bins on wheels were dropped off to East Forest Park homes almost a month ago, a pilot program designed to increase recycling by making it much easier. But a group of Springfield residents say they have a better way to get people to sort their trash with a financial incentive that could be enough to eliminate the city's controversial trash fee.

"I own three barrels, that's 2-hundred-80 dollars a year, a lot of money I cant afford, " says Springfield resident Carlos Diaz.

But Diaz and other homeowners gave the Financial Control Board an idea they think could end the trash fee altogether.

Right now it's estimated 8-percent of the city recycles. Diaz says if that number increases to 80 percent, the recycled metal, paper and plastic could bring the city 2-million dollars a year, money that could replace the trash fee.

"The question is, do you want to pay 90 dollars a year or do you want to pay half of that, or not pay at all, just for taking the cans out of your trash, " asks Gumersindo Gomez of Springfield.

But if they don't get want they want, they plan on doing it anyway. " We are going around getting signatures to get it on the ballot, if they won't help us, we will do it our way, " adds Diaz.
