Historic Planes Land in New England

By Matthew Campbell

When Walter Limberger sees the fighter planes, he gets choked up.

"I might have had a few tears coming out of my eyes," Limberger admits.

Walter is a WWII veteran, so he knows these planes like a modern day pilot knows his F-15. And four planes right out of your history books, landed Monday at Bradley airport.

The vintage B-17, B-24, B-25 along with the P-51 Mustang, are now on display.

It brings back memories for former B-24 pilot Peter Rembetsky, who bravely fought the Nazis in these very planes.

"I did 30 missions as a lead crew pilot," Rembetsky says.

He got a chance to soar the friendly skies Monday.

"I was noticing here what they crew had to go through sitting in these planes. I felt sorry for them," Rembetsky says.

The luxuries on today's aircrafts were nowhere to be found on board the old fighter planes.

"At 1,500 feet, it was 65 below 0 degrees, so our comfort wasn't of concern, we were just trying to stay alive," Limberger says.

Staying alive was no easy task for these heroes, and it's not something the younger generations often realize. That's why these vets know their legacy lives on at each stop of the tour.

"People are coming back to tell their stories of the things they missed and had to do without, maybe the children will realize it's not a bad place to live after all," Limberger says.

The planes leave on October 1st. They're located at Bradley at the back of the airport on West Perimeter Road near the FedEx. Tours run from 10:00 AM through 5:00 PM Tuesday, September 30; and 10:00 AM through 12:00 PM on Wednesday, October 1.
