Fenway Park in Your Own Backyard

By Lesley Tanner

"I wanted somewhere where the kids could come out, have some fun and serve their community at the same time," says Christopher Dolan.

Dolan decided to build Fenway Westfield after playing a game of backyard ball with his son.

"There's something about baseball that just causes a connection between people," says Dolan.

It took two months and a lot of help to finish the project, so that when players took the field for Sunday's opening day, everything, from the scoreboard to some of the game's greatest, were exactly one fourth their original size.

"Coming here, seeing the scoreboard up, the pole in place and the net, the mound. Everything coming together like this was really a highlight," says Bob Cree, the Headmaster of Westfield's Community Christian School.

"It's really fun to catch a ball off the monster," says Austin Cason.

"It's fun to pretend like you're actually on Fenway," says Jordan Cree.

But fun wasn't Dolan's only goal. The park was built as a fund raising tool for the Community Christian School in Westfield. And though the park got a late start this season, Dolan says next season will include a full schedule of events to benefit the school and other community causes.

"To be able to use the field, and use baseball, to be able to bring families together, bring the community together for good causes," says Dolan. "To me that is just great."
