Rain Threat Prompts Flood Concern in Hadley

With all the rain coming, one town is reminded of their damaged water dike. Parts of Hadley could be under water if the Connecticut River forces it to break.

An earthen dike separates Hadley from the Connecticut River. But recently, cracks have been found in the grassy dike on West Street.

"A walker along the dike noticed the cracks and reported it," says Town Administrator David Nixon.

That was June 1st. Thursday, those cracks have grown deeper and more pronounced, threatening the town with flooding. If the barrier falls, it has the potential to make Hadley a part of the river.

"It will result in the river changing it's course throughout Hadley," Nixon says.

And that could mean an all out disaster for the town.

"It's more likely a new channel of the river will be carved through the middle of town," Nixon says.

Nixon has weathered these storms all summer long and now he's hoping they'll make it through the Fall.

"We have high hopes that we can keep the dike together for the immediate future and we have contingency plans if we see a major subsidence," Nixon says.

Those plans would be a quick, on the spot, patch job. But if that fails, the next step would be flood response.

The biggest threat is rain falling in Vermont and the water rapidly rushing downstream. Not rain falling in Western Mass, which is what is forecasted this weekend. But residents are still concerned for the future of this town.

"It actually has the potential to affect crop production this year because it's coming up on corn season and they're going to be harvesting," resident Sara Gauthier says.

Hadley's ultimate goal is to build a new dike. First they need a permit to do that and town officials will meet with the DEP next month.

Plans are still moving ahead to repair the cracks. That's scheduled for November and December. Until then, all Hadley residents can do is hold a collective breath and hope it's not a wet fall season.
