Agawam Bike Path Stabbing A Hoax

By CBS 3 Springfield News

"He called on 911 and claimed he was attacked and someone tried to steal his bike, he says someone stabbed him in his side. He was with his daughter when it happened, " says Agawam Police Chief Robert Campbell.

The story concocted by 34-year-old Michael Ralph of Agawam sent shock waves through the normally quiet town of Agawam, and the police department.

"It's a very bold crime, it happened at 10:43 in morning and to have someone really do that in front of a child was unthinkable to people in Agawam, " adds Campbell.

So Agawam police pulled out all the stops to track down the suspect. They had five detectives working the case, and called in a State Police crime team to perform D-N-A testing, but after a week of interviews with the victim, Chief Robert Campbell says the supposed victim's statements didn't add up. And residents who live in the area didn't buy it either. After a week long investigation, the victim came clean to police.

"He ultimately admitted he self inflicted wound and threw the knife, " says Chief Campbell.

Ralph has been charged with filing a false police report and will be summonsed to court next week.
