Air Show Lands in Western Mass

The Thunderbirds are getting ready. The Great New England Air Show lands in Western Mass this weekend.

8 F-16s will scream through the Western Mass sky. Loops and turns, and spins with speed, the Thunderbirds will bring the excitement.

"The show itself, there's a lot of intense concentration. Sometimes we fly, normally about three feet apart, sometimes 18 inches, so there's no time to sightsee, there's a lot of intense concentration," Major Scott Poteet, a Thunderbird pilot from New Hampshire says.

But the show could be threatened if Hannah has her way. Forecasts show the tropical storm will land in Western Mass on Saturday, during the first day of festivities. But organizers say the show should go on.

"If we can fly based in our weather minimums, we'll do it, but we're going to be as safe as possible when we make those decisions," says Air Force Capt. Elizabeth Kreft.

"We've trained in weather, we've trained in rain and as long as we meet our weather criteria, we will perform a show," Major Poteet says.

The show is the talk of the town. Like the parking lots, Chicopee's Memorial Drive will be packed. Occupancy at the Quality Inn is already at 100 percent.

"We're pretty much sold out all weekend, we've had to turn people away. The air show is bringing in a lot of guests," says Quality Inn worker, Amelia Bosley.

But there's a downside too to the air show: Massive traffic. Westover Road is quiet now, and that's the way the Chicken Queen likes it, because on the weekend where nearly half a million people drive by, only a few actually stop in.

"People get intimidated coming out of this parking lot with the bumper to bumper traffic," says worker Andrew Iwanicki.

The traffic is brutal, but the upside is the event is free, and as long as you can see the sky, you'll be in for a good show.
