Tropical Storm Hanna Threatens Local Traditions

By Lesley Tanner

"We were rained out on Saturday both of the last two years, and we're hoping we can at least get part of Saturday in," says Southwick Firefighter John Westcott.

Tropical Storm Hanna has already wreaked havoc in the Dominican Republic and is expected to hit land in the Carolina's late Friday. The storm will then move up the coast and into our area late Saturday or early Sunday. With gusty winds and heavy rains possible throughout the weekend, the organizers of Southwick's Annual Firemen's Carnival are worried the may miss out on essential fund raising.

"Saturday is about half out money," says Westcott. "We have a volunteer department, we really do need money for additional equipment. The town gives us a basic account and anything else we need to raise money for."

Another big event that is in need of clear skies is The Great New England Air Show at Chicopee's Westover Air Reserve Base. The event is expected to draw crowds up to a half a million, and the threat of severe weather could keep the planes grounded.

"If it's raining we can still fly, but if there's lightning within five miles of the air field we won't be able to take off," says U.S. Air Force Captain Elizabeth Kreft. "We're gonna make sure we're doing things as safe as possible for the people in the area and the people on the ground."

The Brimfield Antique Show finishes up their final show of the year on Sunday, and the rains could hurt the weekend sales. But for all three events organizers hope residents will take advantage of the nice weather while it's here, and are holding out hope that Hanna won't dampen the fun.

The Brimfield Antique Show runs September 2 through 7 from sunrise until sunset. The Great New England Air Show will be taking to the skies from 9-4pm on Saturday and Sunday, September 6 and 7. And you can catch the Southwick Firemen's Carnival Thursday, Friday and Saturday nights from 6-11pm.
