Slowing Down Amherst Drivers

Tools

By Justine Judge

In case you missed the speed limit sign down Lincoln Ave in Amherst, don't fret.

There's about 30 more lined up one after the other to remind you it's a 30 mile an hour zone. All of the signs are hand painted by area residents who have had enough of cars flying past their homes.

Area Resident Philip Jackson says, "This is just designed to try and raise awareness amongst the drivers and try to draw a little attention to it."

Residents say drivers have been traveling down their neighborhood roads at dangerous speeds in fact they clocked someone recently going 80 miles an hour

Residents add that over the past five years there have been more than 30 accidents in this area. A statistic they say is unacceptable considering the large number of children and pets living here.

Jackson says, "We have somewhere upwards of 12 to 15 thousand cars a day that are coming through this residential neighborhood."

And that number is getting larger since many motorists use the roadways from Route 9 to bypass downtown and head straight to the University.

Amherst police set up this blinking sign that tracks speed with radar. Residents say the signs seem to slow some cars, but say the town needs to find a permanent solution.

Jackson says, "This is really about the integrity of this neighborhood and there are other downtown neighborhoods that abut the and abut the campus that really need to get some relief."

The town hopes to have a plan to slow traffic by the end of the month.

In the meantime residents will be rallying with their kids and pets on Lincoln Avenue this Friday at 4:00 PM

They hope by showing drivers who lives on the roads they will think about slowing down.
