Bold Thieves Steal Wallet at Big Y

By Matthew Campbell

Gone in 15 seconds. Two bold criminals make off with a woman's wallet by simply distracting her.

"You see them in different parts of the store looking for someone's wallet and someone's pocketbook who's visible," says Amherst Police detective, Christina Knightly.

It happened outside the Amherst Big Y on Route 9. The pair wanted to know the difference between eggs and Egg Beaters. It was an innocent question and the friendly victim obliged. But it was that act of kindness that left her empty handed. As the woman asked her egging questions, her partner takes a swipe at her purse---not once, not twice, but three times, and the last attempt, with both hands.

"This person's intent all along was to distract this person so the male associate could take it," Det. Knightly says.

The egg lovers didn't go far before cashing in big time. Surveillance tape gives viewers a clear look at the woman. She's buying cigarettes at the 66 station in Hadley. Later, cameras caught the egg obsessed duo entering the West Springfield Big Y. Here, they made off with thousands of dollars in gift and phone cards. Both suspects are still on the loose, but this story provides a life lesson to all women: Never leave your valuables in the cart.

"People are always out there, looking for that opportunity to steal your things," Det. Knightly says

And after hearing about it, some shoppers will always keep their bags close.

"I used to have it in the carriage, now I kinda have it across me or with it in front of me," says Cheryl Waterman.

If you have any information about the suspects, you're urged to call Amherst Police at 413-259-3000.
