Tactical Team Protects Franklin County

Officer Marcus Paulin is one of 14 Greenfield officers who volunteered to trade in his patrol uniform to suit up for the Special Response Team. When needed the highly trained squad responds to events most officers rarely ever see.

"Execute search warrants, respond to hostage situations, barricaded subjects, missing person searches and respond to any type of emergency situation that would require a larger number," says Officer Paulin.

It takes time to assemble all 14 officers, that's why there are at least two on every regular shift, so they can respond at a moments notice.

"The other officers can kind of follow suit, and that way we'll have the best people trained to handle those situations for the public's safety and ours," says Paulin.

It's training and equipment that doesn't come cheap, and the department can't fund.

"We have ballistic vests underneath our gear, ballistic helmets, eye protection," says Paulin. "We have a few different tactical weapons."

To keep the team running they rely on donations from the community. This weekend they will partner with Montague's Special Response Team to host a dinner at the Schuetzen-Verein Club in Gill, an event that will allow them to continue their work.

"It's a small town or a small city yes, but we're getting busier and busier," says Paulin. "Those situations have risen, and this way we are properly trained to protect the public and ourselves."

The fundraiser will be help Saturday August 23. It starts at 5pm with dinner served at 6:30. Tickets cost between 15 and 20 dollars, and children under 12 are free.

There will be music and games for the kids. For more information, or to get tickets, call Greenfield Police (413)773-5411 or Montague Police (413)863-2913.
