Drinking Age Debate Enters Collegiate Forum

By Matthew Campbell

Five Western Mass college presidents want to give your freshman the power to get drunk.

"If I'm able to get in the army and get killed, why can't I get drunk," asks AIC freshman Terrance Garner.

"I think it should be legal," says AIC student Jonathan Schultz.

Some college presidents think it should be too. UMass, along with American International, Hampshire, Mount Holyoke and Smith Colleges have all signed on to the Amethyst Initiative. It's a statement saying, 21 isn't working and it's time to rethink that policy.

"18, 17, 21, everyone is going to be drinking anyway, so it's the same thing," says AIC freshman Stephen Benjamin.

That's exactly what the presidents think. This is the logic behind it: If everyone had equal access, the attractiveness and exclusivity of alcohol would be washed away. Presidents are hoping possible results would include less binge drinking. But some at AIC would embrace the alcohol to the fullest.

"I have no self control. I can't even control myself right now," says Benjamin.

And he says he's always been sober. But that's why Mothers Against Drunk Driving came out in full opposition. They say the initiative would have the opposite effect. Non drinkers would drink and more teens would follow along.

But some girls at Mount Holyoke College may have it right, saying it all rests on the student's responsibility.

"It gives them the chance to be too irresponsible a little too early," says sophomore Sarah Obuobi.

The debate will rage on, most likely for years to come. If you think only small colleges signed off, think again. Prestigous Duke University signed on as well as big party school, Ohio State.
