Taxi Service Runs Out of Gas

Taxi Service Runs Out of Gas

By Justine Judge

These city cabs were once busy all around Springfield picking up and dropping off customers. Now they sit in a row, unused and out of gas.

Gary Vogel works for Yellow Cab, now the only licensed cab company in the city. He says it's become a difficult way to earn a living.

Vogel says, "City Cab went under because of different economic problems that all cab companies are facing the owners are facing higher insurance rates and higher maintenance cost."

And most companies make the driver cover the cost of fuel.

Vogel says, "I've taken a 300 dollar a week hit in pay in the last six months because in just fuel charges because as drivers we pay for our own fuel."

And what doesn't help are the no shows. People who call for cab service and are not there when the driver shows up. All in all, a waste of fuel.

Vogel says, "We're not keep sending a cab across the city for you and your not there and there is somebody else that we could be servicing."

Yellow Cab has seen an increase in customers since City Cab's closing. The hard part now, making sure there are drivers.

Vogel says, "There is a high turnover of cab drivers which means there is a lower class of cab drivers and you know, driving comes with experience."

But one thing's for sure.

Vogel says, "Cab drivers will be around forever, people need to get from place to place."

City Cab's closing has left at least half a dozen people out of work. Yellow Cab says they will do what they can to help and plan on hiring some of those drivers.
