Drunk Driver Leaves Teen with Life Changing Injuries

By Justine Judge

Clara Gardner remains in serious condition after being struck by a drunk driver at a train station in Springfield leaving friends and family in Shock

Garrett Keefe says, "she is one of those kinds of people who constantly has a smile on her face just one of the most bubbly personalities that I know."

16 year old Clara Gardner, who will be a Senior at Northampton High, was on her way home after spending a month in Mexico studying Spanish.

But after traveling thousands of miles, the most dangerous part of the trip turned out to be here in Springfield, as friends picked her up at train station.

Police say as Clara loaded luggage into a van, a car came speeding down the street with 20 year old Roberto Carrasquillo behind the wheel. Carrasquillo rear-ended the van, pinning Clara between the two cars.

Friends say Clara suffered life-changing injuries to both legs.

Althea Wilson'Berkowitz says, "She loved to dance and write poetry and do art, she had a lot of hobbies and a lot of things she loved to do, she ran track and cross country."

Althea lived right down the road from Clara and says they've been friends since they were five.

Berkowitz says, "No mater how close we were or what our friendship was like because it changed a lot, she lived right down there, and we would always meet half way and sit on our neighbors lawn at random times and just catch up, it's sad we wont be able to do that in the same way."

Clara meant a lot to many. Garrett Keefe is one of them. He sang in Choir with Clara and says he still can't believe the accident happened.

Keefe says, "It's so not deserving to anyone, especially for Clara for something like this to happen to her."

Clara Gardner is in serious condition at Baystate Medical Center.

Carrasquillo has been charged with drunk driving and leaving the scene of an accident. He's being held on a half million dollar bail.
