Traveling Poetry Hut

By CBS 3 Springfield News

It's a place to think, love, laugh and vent. Between the wooden slats of "The Poetry Hut" hang white pieces of paper adorned with words.

But they're not decoration, they're messages. Not to anyone in particular. Just anyone who cares to take a look.

Gene Flores says, "People really have something to say, many people really have something to say that they couldn't because there was no other place to voice it."

That is until Susan and Gene Flores created the little house to honor a request for poems. The couple built the the hut in 2007 for an art show in Stockbridge. The idea was to create a place where people could write and hang up your writings and read what others had left.

Susan Flores says, "We had no idea if in fact anyone would go in and write anything but over the summer in Stockbridge there was over 2,000 things written."

Which got them thinking about what other towns had to say. So now they move the Hut from place to place. Once the poetry hut has spent some time in each town Gene and Susan take the poems hanging inside the walls and turn it into a book which they give to the towns for free.

Susan Flores says, "We kind of came to think of it as a reflection of the town."

Gene Flores says, "By giving a collective voice it might help bring people together and closer to each other."

Right now the hut is in Shelburne Falls where it wills stay until September.
