Broadband Internet Comes to Under-served Areas

It can take Art Schwenger a 1/2 hour to open an e-mail with a picture or one that has a big file, from his home in Heath.

"It is frustrating," said Schwenger.

It's a frustration that many in the hill towns feel. While most households freely use the internet and check e-mail in a matter of seconds, 31 communities in Western Massachusetts only have dial-up and another 60 have limited broadband.

"It is important for education, economic development, and for civic reasons," said Governor Patrick.

In front of the Goshen Town Hall, one of a few WiFi hot-spots in the area, Governor Patrick signed a bill investing $40 million to expand broadband infrastructure and service to under-served areas. It is a critical step in moving these communities out of the dated dial-up.

"We recognize broadband as critical to economic development, public health and safety. A lot more people will be able to work from home. There are businesses that are struggling with dial up, and don't feel as competitive," said Linda Dunlavy, of the Pioneer Valley Connect.

Governor Patrick said this money will attract and complement private sector investments, making it more cost-effective for private providers. State officials say the broadband expansion will be completed within the next three years.
