Cell Phones Cause Cancer?

By Liz Tufts

Cell phones are not just for quick calls anymore. People get on them and talk for long periods of time with the phone held tightly to the head. And that's what concerns Dr. Richard Herberman, the Director of the Pittsburgh Cancer Institute.

"I would really hate to stand by and wait for an epidemic of brain tumors to occur before something is done about it, " says Dr. Herberman.

Herberman is basing his claim that cell phones cause cancer on non-published data. He says since science will take too long to prove that it's true, so he believes people should take action now, especially when it comes to children. But not all cancer researchers agree with his theory.

"I think in the absence in real data, I'm not concerned, and no else should be, " says.Dr Wilson Merterns.

Dr. Wilson Mertens is the medical director for cancer services at Baystate Medical Center. He says he's surprised by Dr. Heberman's assumption.

"Whenever new technology comes out people are in fear. Just like when trains were invented some were afraid that their heart would implode by going 35 miles per hour, " adds Dr. Mertens.

Dr. Mertens says you don't have to put down your cell phones to prevent cancer, he says all you have to do is lead a healthy lifestyle like quitting smoking and get annual health screenings. He actually says you are more likely to get hit by a car than getting cancer from talking on the phone.
