Disabled Woman Dies After Van Crash

Kevin Euber was taking out the trash at around 8 o'clock yesterday morning on Sumner Avenue when he heard tires squealing across the road.

"I saw a little white car come darting around the corner," says Euber. "Shortly after I saw the white van spinning out of control and impact the pole."

Euber ran to the van to help, and along with the driver began checking on the six passengers inside. Police say they all have mental disabilities.

"There was definitely a panicked look on their face, but they didn't communicate well," says Euber.

As they waited for an ambulance a passing nurse stopped to help.

"She kind of took charge of the scene and said, 'Don't move this person,'" says Euber.

The impact was so severe two of the passengers were thrown out of their wheelchairs. On scene it appeared everyone suffered only minor injuries, but on the way to the hospital a 67 year old Wilbraham woman had a heart attack and died.

"It's heartbreaking that someone passed away," says witness Judy Kirzec. "I can't understand how that happened actually."

The driver says the white car cut him off, forcing him to swerve into the pole, a move Euber says he may not have had to make on a drier day.

"Had the roads been dry," says Euber. "There was ample amount of space for that all to occur, and probably none of it would have happened."

Human Resources Unlimited is now asking the public to step forward with information regarding the driver of that white car. As for the van driver police say he has not been cited, but the accident is still under investigation, and the district attorney's office has been notified.
