Update: Chicopee Cats Euthanized

By Liz Tufts

Only three of the forty cats removed from a Chicopee home because of unsanitary conditions were able to be saved.

Just two days after the MSPCA removed 40 cats from a Chicopee home only three of the youngest were able to be saved. "The cats were so aggressive, after years of not being touched by humans," says Pam Peebles of the MSPCA.

The animals were brought in on Wednesday as our cameras caught their behavior on tape. Some of them were so scared of human touch, they scaled the walls, and hid in unusual places. But what took their lives in the end were the serious health problems they acquired after years of being cooped up inside their East Street home.

"We found poor conditions, outer fur had red lesions, intestines felt like rope, heavy parasite load, ears to tail. Horrific for them, " adds Peebles.

The owner's neighbors alerted MSPCA officials to the problem and eventually the woman asked that the cats be removed from her home. As of now, no legal action has been taken. Officials say they will keep in contact with the woman to make sure she's not hoarding any more cats but they advise anyone with the same problem to step forward and get some help.

The three kittens that did survive are only a few weeks old and are doing well. If you are interested in adopting them, contact the MSPCA.
