Prosecutors say 18 year old Louis Jiles was not trying to assault the officers who pulled him over, before one of them shot him in the wrist. Police say Officer Stephen Hill fired three shots after pulling over Jiles. Hill allegedly thought Jiles was reaching for a gun when he fired those shots.
With his wrist still bandaged 18 year old Louis Jiles pleaded not guilty to several traffic charges. But one charge he did not have to answer to was assault and battery with a dangerous weapon.
"It just couldn't pass the laugh test that the police were claiming that this young man had some sort of dangerous weapon," says Jiles's Attorney Perman Glenn III.
That dangerous weapon was a beer bottle Jiles had in his car. When police tried to pull him over Saturday evening Jiles panicked and turned a corner hoping to hide the beer from police. He eventually stopped the car on Kensington Avenue, and that's when Officer Stephen Hill fired three shots, hitting Jiles once in the wrist. But after an investigation both sides agree Jiles never intended to use that bottle to threaten police.
"We're human, humans make mistakes, and we believe that's exactly what this is," says Glenn. "The officer being untrained and unsupervised made a mistake and shot this young man in the wrist."
"I believe it was a mistake, I don't hate the officer but I just want to see justice done," says Patricia Jiles, the defendant's mother.
The District Attorney's Office released a statement admitting it was a mistake, but say it was unintentional and will not file criminal charges against Officer Hill. Jiles's attorney says it's a matter that needs further investigation from an outside source.
"We must have citizens from this city to review allegations against police," says Glenn. "Having police review police is unfair and unjust."
Jiles was released without bail and says while he still has a criminal case to deal with he knows the outcome could have been much worse.
"I'm alright," says Jiles. "I'm living so that's good enough for me."
Officer Hill has been working inside the police department in an administrative position since the incident. He will continue doing that until the department completes their investigation, which should be done within the week.
