4 Year Old Nearly Drowns in Hotel Pool

By Matthew Campbell

A 4 year old girl was rushed to Mercy Medical Center after she was found face down in a Springfield hotel pool.

"A woman started yelling, help me, help me," says witness Elaine Lynch.

"She panicked. She panicked, she panicked," says another witness.

Witnesses can't help but get emotional after what they saw at the Holiday Inn on Dwight Street in Springfield. The hotel has a sign that clearly states no lifeguard was on duty.

Police tell us it started innocently enough. The four year old was playing with her 15 year old relative, jumping into her arms.

They don't exactly know what happened next, but later, that four year old girl was spotted playing on the steps, near the shallow entrance to the pool. She was jumping, when she fell in face first.

The girl was found blue and motionless. Her grandmother sat feet away, yet wasn't aware of the danger her granddaughter was in.

"The grandmother was sitting in the pool area, playing cards," Lynch says.

Rescue came in the form of an 8 year old. She spotted the girl, and got help.

"She got junk out of her nose, turned her to the side, and she was still blue," Lynch says.

Ambulances rushed to the scene, but no one was there. The situation was so serious, police who got to the scene first, took matters into their own hands, and rushed the young victim to Mercy Medical Center, two blocks away.

She was stabilized and moved to Baystate where she has a heartbeat, and is breathing on her own.

The family was in town for a Jehovah's Witness conference taking place in Amherst.
