Easthampton Man Sentenced to Probation for Teen Alcohol Death

By Matt DeLucia

The man who admitted to giving alcohol to a minor who later died is sentenced. But, the family of 15-year old Alexis Garcia says the punishment does not fit the crime.

The family of 15-year-old Alexis Garcia says the minor punishment received by the man who admitted to involuntary manslaughter is a great injustice to her niece. Timothy Parent, 47 of Easthampton was sentenced to 5 years probation after pleading guilty in Hampshire Superior Court Wednesday.

Robin Fortier, Garcia's aunt said, "She was a loving, beautiful child who brought us so much happiness. She deserved to live a nice, long life. 15 isn't long enough."

And neither is the sentence, Fortier said for the man who admitted to playing a role in the death of her niece. The Easthampton teen died last year after drinking a heavy amount of alcohol that was provided by Parent. Assistant District Attorney Elizabeth Dunphy Farris said Parent gave a bottle of vodka to his 15-year-old daughter, who later brought it to Garcia's home on Monska Drive. It was there Garcia suffered from alcohol poisoning and drowned in the shower. Parent was charged with manslaughter. He changed his plea to "guilty" Wednesday and was sentenced to 5 years of probation.

"This man pleaded guilty to manslaughter for causing her death and he's going to walk out of the courtroom. We really couldn't believe it," Fortier said, adding that the sentence sets a bad example for other parents who host parties for their teens.

"There's no incentive to prevent this from happening again with this type of sentence," she said.

Even though Massachusetts has a "social host" law against providing alcohol to minors, the prosecutor said this incident did not meet the criteria for a tougher sentence.

CBS 3 spoke with Assistant District Attorney Elizabeth Dunphy Farris Thursday. She said Parent was reckless in giving the alcohol to his own 15-year-old daughter, but because he did not give that alcohol directly to Garcia, Farris said probation was the the most appropriate sentence.
