Holyoke Lawmakers Weigh Possible Speeding Ticket Surcharge

Tools

By Matthew Campbell

Holyoke could be the first Bay State city that has a speeding surcharge. City Councilor James Leahy wants to add $12 to every speeding ticket issued in the Paper City.

"How do you reduce speeding? Hit em where it hurts. In the pocketbook," Leahy says.

With gas prices soaring, the police department can't keep up. Last year, Holyoke cops went 12 thousand dollars over budget on gas and that's well before prices hit 3 and 4 dollars a gallon.

Under Leahy's plan, 8 of the 12 dollars will be doled out to the fuel costs, while the other $4 will go to city.

"Instead of piggybacking that onto the taxpayers, why not piggyback it on to those committing the crime," he says.

Currently every speeding ticket in the city is a minimum of $100.
