Fugitive Hedge-Fund Swindler Surrenders in Mass.

By CBS 3 Springfield News

SOUTHWICK, Mass. (AP) - A convicted hedge fund swindler who set
off a national manhunt when he faked his suicide and failed to
report to prison has surrendered in Southwick.

Samuel Israel walked into the police station in Southwick at
about 9:15 a.m. and identified himself as a fugitive wanted by the
federal government. Police said he was talking to his mother on a
cell phone at the time.

Officer Paul Miles said Israel was a "perfect gentleman"
during his surrender.

Israel was taken to U.S. District Court in Springfield, where a
judge ordered him returned to New York to face a charge of failing
to surrender.

Israel disappeared June 9 just hours before he was scheduled to
begin a 20-year sentence at the federal prison in Devens for
bilking investors in the 450 million dollar hedge fund.

Israel's SUV was found abandoned on a bridge over the Hudson
River outside New York City with a note suggesting that he had
committed suicide.
