Day Care Center Evacuated

By Miranda Grossman

The fun ended abruptly Tuesday for kids at a Westfield day care center when fire broke out. It was a frantic and scary moment for parents, wondering where and how their children are doing. But luckily, the day care center had an evacuation plan that went smoothly.

As word spread about the fire at the Kids Place day care center on Southampton Road, worried parents came rushing in to see if their children were okay. "There were fire trucks, ambulances and cops. I pulled in and ran and grabbed her, that's all I was thinking about, to get her, to get my daughter," said Sarah Kotarski, who was picking up her daughter.

Westfield Fire Officials say around 9 a.m. on Tuesday, fire broke out at the back of the day care center. The 49 children plus staff were already out of the building when officials got on scene. "Everybody was out of the building, they did an excellent job. Everybody was in the rear corner, in the playground, everybody was accounted for," said Chief Patrick Kane, of the Westfield Fire Department.

Westfield firefighters instructed the children and staff to go to the Southampton Elementary School, right up the road. Parents were notified and picked them up at the school. "Parents are okay, but they are concerned. But once they got here, they realized their kids were safe," said Cindy Hutcheson, the Director of Education at the Kids Place.

Fire officials say there is at least $150,000 in damage from heavy smoke and water. They say the cause of the fire was wiring to a clothes dryer on the first floor, that shorted out. Kids Place will not re-open for a while. However, staff say in the meantime, children will be able to go to one of their other locations.
