Southwick Man Dies After Run In with Boston Police

By Justine Judge

On the night of June 18th 9 Boston police officers patrolling near Fenway Park saw 22 year old David Woodman with a friends celebrating the Celtics win over the LA Lakers.

Police say Woodman was drinking alcohol, a violation of the open container law. When they approached him, he fled. Police quickly apprehended Woodman. They say he struggled and quickly became ill.

Boston Police Commissioner Ed Davis says, "They noticed he was in distress when he was on the ground and they immediately took the hand cuffs off when they and administer CPR."

Davis says an ambulance arrived within 11 minutes. After 11 days in the hospital, Woodman was pronounced dead Sunday. Officials say the Southwick High School grad and Emmanuel College student had a pre-existing heart condition.

But the Woodman's family attorney, Howard Friedman, says Woodman was healthy before his run in with Boston Police. The commissioner says his officers acted appropriately.

Davis says, "While our investigation is still preliminary it appears from the evidence we've reviewed thus far that officers did not use excessive force and that is based upon interviews done with officers and other witnesses."

Officials say they are waiting for autopsy results to determine the exact cause of death.
