Easthampton Police Department Riding on Three-Wheels

By Miranda Grossman

Easthampton police officers are hoping to get a new set of wheels to add to their cruisers. This time, the three-wheel variety.

It's speedier than a bike, more stable than a Segway and more tricked out than a scooter. Easthampton Patrolman and Community Resource Officer Alan Schadel is trying out the latest trend in police patrolling, the T3 Motion. "It is the latest and greatest in electric personal vehicles," said Schadel.

The T3 is already popular in Western and Southern states, and now Easthampton police thought it would be beneficial in Hampshire County. They have already shown it to community members and say they have had a great response. "It takes an officer out of a cruiser and puts him out on the street and get a little more personal with the community."

Equipped with sirens, lights and a place for medical supplies, it can go up to 25 miles per hour and turn on a dime. And in some cases, can get around faster than a cruiser. "We got a call for a man that was down and unresponsive. I responded and arrived a minute ahead of the ambulance."

The T3 runs on electricity and only costs about 8 to 25 cents a day to run. The total price tag for the vehicle however, is about $9,000. The department is testing it out for right now, but they hope to get money from a community policing grant to have one in their arsenal by the fall.
