Springfield Main Street Murder

A Main Street convenience store became the scene of a very public murder early Monday, when a 25 year old man was shot at several times as he left Honeyland Farms in Springfield.

"All the sudden we hear these shots so loud, we thought it was inside the building," says Magdalis Almodovar.

The shots woke up neighbors who looked out the window in time to see the victim stumbling up Central Street before he collapsed and later died.

"This can happen to anyone and I'm not about to take any chances," says Almodovar.

"There's always shootings, or somebody getting hurt, there's drugs," says a resident. "There's too many problems around here."

Problems residents say are getting worse. Though many admit to hearing gunshots in the area, they say they've never hit this close to home.

"As residents we don't want to get involved and get hurt and get threatened, these are guns. Nobody is fighting with their hands anymore."

"I tend to get shook sometimes, meaning I do get afraid from time to time," says Jose Oliveras. "Just because of my kids."

And that scared feeling has convinced many that it's time to move, before the violence moves even closer.

"Summer hasn't even started and this is how bad it is getting, and I don't want anything to happen," says Almodovar.
