Pools Closed, Many Forced to Sweat

Pools Closed, Many Forced to Sweat

By Matt DeLucia

Many swimming pools in Western Massachusetts saw the first splashes of the season this weekend. For people like Anne Podowka in Chicopee, this weekend's heat has been too much, too soon.

"Friday, it was cold out. We had sweatshirts when we went for a walk. We had all the windows closed in the house so we wouldn't have to put the heat on but today, and it is hot. You're out here 15 minutes and you're drenched," Podowka said.

But, at least she was working in the shade. Down the street, Daniel Greenwood was experiencing the full force of the pre-summer sizzle.

"Things have to get done around the house," Greenwood said.

Fortunately though, they all have pools to jump in... Others are not as lucky.

Pools under the supervision of the Massachusetts Conservation and Recreation Department, including those in Chicopee, Springfield, and Agawam are still dry - and they will stay that way for two more weeks until the official summer season is underway June 21.

For the time being, the Five Mile Pond in Springfield is open on weekends, but that might not be enough for the 12-year-old soccer players from Agawam and Monson who were looking for relief at halftime.

"When you're running, you sweat anyway. And when it's hot, you sweat more," said Ashley Beters, who plays for Agawam.
