Settlement Reached in Tainted Pet Food Case

By Matthew Campbell

Last year, pets started dying unexpectedly. It was later discovered the cause was their food. Now, several companies have settled the case.

Paula Provost still holds on to the can of food responsible for the death of four of her pets. The Agawam woman is one of the 250 plaintiffs suing Menu Foods.

"I rescued them to give them a better life. That's what I hoped I was doing, but it didn't turn out that way. Turns out I was killing them," Provost says.

Friday, the company settled for 24 million dollars and almost all of it will go to the victims.

Last year, pet owners scrambled for answers, wanting to know what was killing their pets. Provost was one of the thousands of victims across the country that didn't know it was the food until it was too late.

"My dog loved this food. I never stopped to think that she's slowing down from this," Provost says.

A foreign ingredient caused the pets' kidneys to fail. Now, she's stuck with a $200 veterinarian bill, and three cans of the tainted food.

"They died a horrible death. A horrible death," mourns Provost.

Months later, Provost has rescued more furry friends, but has learned her lesson. None of them get generic food anymore

"I don't trust it. It cost me too much in finance and feelings," she says.

The settlement still needs to be approved by the courts, and most time victims are reimbursed with coupons. That won't be the case here. As it stands, Provost and the others will be paid in cash.
