Animals Rescued From Side of Road

By Jennifer Thome

More than 15 dogs and cats were found living in a tent in Franklin County. Their owners were kicked out of their apartment and had no where to go but the side of the road.

Christine Allenberg, MSPCA Officer, says, "This situation is just heart wrenching."

One by one the 11 dogs and 5 cats will be put in cages and packed off to the MSPCA after living in a tent.

Allenberg says, "All the dogs and cats are in excellent condition. They're obviously well loved. They're cared for."

They're loved by Sheryl Stewart and her friend.

Sheryl Stewart says, "The MSPCA is coming to take the animals and if we're not out of here by 8 o'clock tonight {Monday} then we will be arrested."

Charged with squatting by the side of the road after living in a tent in Greenfield on Route 2.

Stewart says,"We did rescues so we ended up leaving with 11 dogs and 5 cars."

They say they ran Jake's Haven. Stewart and her friend were kicked out of their apartment a week and a half ago after they say they fell behind on their rent. With no place else to go they pitched a tent and cared for their many animals until Monday.

Allenberg says, "They have made the responsible decision to sign the dogs over to the MSPCA."

A right choice but not an easy one. While Stewart hugs one of her dogs goodbye, she listens to the others barking.

The MSPCA officer says the two women will heading to a women's shelter. All the dogs and cats seem to be well cared for but will be evaluated then they will be put up for adoption.
