Vandals Destroy Head Start Playground

Vandals Destroy Head Start Playground

By Lesley Tanner

The playground behind Head Start's Eastern Avenue Center was unveiled in October. The ribbon was cut and bright new equipment was ready for use. Several months later the equipment is now unusable after vandals set it on fire on Mother's Day afternoon.

"Feeling very outraged and upset over the senseless vandalism," says Nicole Blais of Head Start.

"I worry about my child and all the children," says parent Eduardo Delacruz. "It could be dangerous all because of this act of vandalism."

A senseless act that was difficult for teachers to explain to their students, who are all under the age of five. But instead of anger or confusion the students offered generosity.

"The children around the circle started raising their hands saying, 'I'm gonna bring in my pennies, nickles, dimes for the new playground,'" says teacher Rhonda Setkewich.

When you first enter the Head Start playground it's hard to notice the vandalism, but as you walk towards the back you can vividly see the melted plastic and charred equipment that is keeping kids inside.

"My daughter used to go home and always say, 'We went to the playground and it was fun,'" says Delacruz. "Now that this happened what is she gonna say? Where is she gonna go?"

Head Start officials are working with the insurance company to replace the equipment as quickly as possible, and say they are also discussing possible security cameras or additional locks to prevent another act of vandalism.

"That's our goal is to make sure this stays a safe and happy place," says Blais.
