Hundreds Mourns Loss of Basketball Captain

By CBS 3 Springfield News

SPRINGFIELD, Mass. (AP) - Grief counselors will be at
Springfield Central High School this week after the shooting death
of a captain of the school's basketball team.

Nineteen-year-old Mario Hornsby, Jr., was gunned down early
Saturday morning after attending a dance at a local nightclub.

Investigators do not believe Hornsby was the target of the
shooting, and no arrests have been reported.

The school's basketball coach, Mike Labrie, says Hornsby was a
quiet leader who commanded respect from his peers and from adults.

Close friend and teammate Preye Preboye says the team plans to
wear shirts with Hornsby's name and photo, and are planning a
summer basketball tournament in his honor.

Assistant principal Tad Tokarz says Hornsby was planning to
enter a prep school program at Brandeis University this fall.
