Springfield Sweeps Trashy Homes

By Liz Tufts

The city of Springfield is doing another sweep of trashy homes. On Friday, officials gave homeowners an ultimatum, clean up their mess, or get out.

With trashy driveways, over grown grass, and boarded up windows some rundown properties are ruining some Springfield neighborhoods.

"They need to clean it up. All it does is bring kids out, and then animals come out into the area," says Springfield resident Ronn Miller. City officials are taking messes like this seriously.

It's part of Operation Clean Sweep, an effort that's cracking down on neglected properties and landlords.

"There's a pile of trash in backyards and what happens once one person does it, other people continue to," says City Solicitor Lisa DeSousa.

But in addition to neglecting their properties, many landlords neglected to appear in court on Friday. The city brought more than a hundred cases before housing court to give homeowners the chance to clean up their properties. Only 29 showed up, leaving clean up to the city.

"If they don't show up today the city will enter the property and clean it, mow it, then place a lien against the property to recover cost of doing that," adds DeSousa.

This is the second year of the sweep and so far hundreds of properties have been beautified. The next sweep will be on June 27th.
