Fire Destroys Hilltown Business

A Hilltown business is destroyed by an early morning fire. Clark Logging and Lumber in Heath burned to the ground just after four.

Piles of sawdust, charred lumber and mangled machinery are all that is left after an early morning fire ripped through Clark Logging and Lumber on Branch Hill Road in Heath.

"The fire started basically in the center of the saw mill near the power unit," says Heath Fire Chief Michael Smith. "It could have been something electrical, we're just not sure."

Fire officials say the blaze was already out of control by the time the company's owner noticed it from his nearby home. And though the business sits just a few hundred feet from the department fire crews couldn't prevent this total loss.

"Because we are all volunteers we all had to come to the fire house from our homes, so there was that added response," says Chief Smith. "We had two strikes against us right away."

And as crews do their best to clean up, it's not only the Clark family devastated by the destruction.

"It's a punch in the stomach to the community," says Smith. "Everybody in town knows Bill and his sons. A lot of us by lumber there for projects that we're doing on our own from a small doghouse to a very large barn or a whole home."

Fire officials say the fire is not suspicious but because of the amount of damage they will most likely have to close this case without an official cause.

The building was not insured but family members say they just want to clean up and start all over.
