Local Rep. Pushes for Tough Inspections at Amusement Parks

By Matthew Campbell

Massachusetts is one of just two states with strict amusement park inspection laws. But the federal government is not involved at all. Metrowest Congressman Edward Markey wants that to change to make sure all rides across the country are safe.

He's been trying for 8 years and now is trying again after a tragic accident that severed a teen's feet.

"Nobody should ever have to go through what I went through, what other people have been through. It's horrific. It's changed my life forever," theme park victim, Kaitlyn Lasitter says.

The 14 year old gets around on just one foot. Last year Kaitlyn was just one of the riders who took the 177 foot plunge at speeds of 55 miles an hour on the Superman ride. Tragically, a cable on that ride snapped, severing Lasitter's feet. It was a sight witnesses can't get out of their minds.

"She didn't have no legs. She didn't have no legs at all," one witness recalls

That ride is at Six Flags Kentucky. Six Flags New England has a similar ride called The Tower Drop.

After spending 10 months in bed and re-learning how to walk, Lasitter broke her silence Wednesday, demanding change on the steps of Capitol Hill.

"It took my legs being taken from me, which people take for granted everyday, for something to change and that's sad," she says.

Right now, regulations vary from state to state.Lasitter is getting help from local Congressman Ed Markey. He wants to involve the federal government in inspections, to create a more uniformed process.

"They can find out what's wrong, correct it, but more importantly, warn the rest of the country," Rep. Markey says.

As summer approaches, millions of thrill seekers will conquer death defying rides. While current stats show less than one injury for every million rides taken, Lasitter hopes the injuries will stop with hers.

The last time the federal government got involved with private theme parks was 25 years ago.
