Bike Commute Week

By Miranda Grossman

Hundreds in Western Massachusetts are proving that two wheels can be better than four, by pedaling their way through bike commute week. Bicyclists showed off their rides in Northampton during a breakfast to kick-start others to ride their bikes to work, instead of sitting in traffic.

Sally Peters, a bike commuter, gave up her steering wheel for handle bars. Every day she rides three miles to work from her home in Easthampton.

"I have been commuting on my bike since 1984," said Sally Peters.

She was way ahead of her time, but many other two-wheeled enthusiasts joined her this week, commuting to work by bike. Peters still has a car, but logs more miles on her bike.

"This year I have logged 4,000 miles on my bike and 3,000 on my car," adds Peters.

"The more people we get to bicycle and take the pedestrian bridge, the fewer people we have on Route 9, sitting in traffic and wasting gasoline," said Price Armstrong of the Massachusetts Bicycling Coalition.

About 10 percent of people use other forms of transportation other than a car, 2 percent of those use a bike, but people at bike commute week, hope that will change.

"Biking is good for the environment, good for the wallet, a good way to deal with oil prices," said Kathy Bonnet, a member of Mass Bike.

All the bicyclists agree that high gas prices could be the thing that drives more and more people back to bikes.
