Driver Pleads Guilty in Death of Pregnant Woman

By Lesley Tanner

A Barre man pleads guilty to causing an accident that took the life of a pregnant woman and her unborn child. The victim's family had hoped the plea would bring them closure, but they are left with only questions.

"We're glad it's over," says the victim's aunt Bonnie Lillis. "But it still doesn't seem like there's a lot of closure to it. We still don't have a reason why, how or what happened."

20 year old Melissa Lillis-Leclair was five months pregnant on the day in April 2007 when Paul Bowdring crossed the center line on Route 32 in Ware and hit her car head on, killing her and her unborn daughter Dakota.

"We talk about her, we think about her and we just try to understand why she's not here anymore," says Lillis.

Melissa was on her way to a pre-natal doctor's appointment with her boyfriend, and though Bowdring plead guilty to causing her death, Dakota's death was not included in the charges.

"We all knew she was coming, we were preparing for it," says Lillis. "And for her not to be mentioned in the whole thing..."

Bowdring was sentenced to 10 years probation and will not be allowed to drive for 15 years. In court he could not explain what caused him to take a sharp turn into oncoming traffic. He does take medication for anxiety and depression, but police determined they did not impair his judgment. Melissa's family says not knowing why is the hardest part.

"We thought we would have a reason or an explanation why," says Lillis. "What happened?"

Bowdring's probation will be reviewed after five years, but the 15 year loss of license can not be changed no matter the outcome of that decision.
