Two Men Jump Out Window During Fire

Hampden Police say two men living at 182 Bennet Road in Hampden had to jump out of a second story window to escape the fire that engulfed their apartment.

It happened around 4:30 Monday morning. 20 year old Michael Southworth was living with his roommate, Steve Damours in an old barn that was renovated and turned into an apartment. Steve Damours is the property owners son. Officials say the men heard a loud explosion and smelled smoke. The first floor of the barn was engulfed with flames and smoke. The only way out was through the second story window.

"When I got to the emergency room, I got to talk with him and apparently they woke up at 3:30, smelled smoke, woke his friend up, when they tried to get downstairs they realized they were trapped and had to go through the sliding glass window," said Scott Southworth, Michael Southworth's father.

The men jumped 15 feet to the ground and are at Baystate Medical Center. Both men had smoke inhalation, and non-life threatening injuries.

"{It} Could have been so much worse, somebody was looking out for him that's for sure. Because if he hadn't of woken up, I don't know what I would be going through right now," said Scott Southworth.

Officials are investigating the cause of the fire. They are unsure if there were any smoke detectors in the apartment.
