Fire Ruins Mother's Day Plans

By Justine Judge

Police say it all started after a Springfield woman was pulled over after reportedly driving the wrong way down West Columbus Avenue.

Police say the woman was driving drunk and when the officer pulled her over he noticed she had fresh damage to the front end of her car but couldn't remember what she hit.

That's when the officer smelled smoke coming from the electrical transformer at the back of this building which had been torn off it's base after police say it was hit by a car.

It was the start of a fire which ruined mothers day plans for a new restaurant and many families.

Isaac Bancaco, Executive Chef at Onyx says, "It's unfortunate we had about 300 reservations today that we all had to call off and who knows how many walk in guests we could have had."

And probably would of had if not for a fire which started in the buildings electrical transformer at 3:55am Sunday morning.

Springfield police believe a car struck the transformer which started the fire and shut down power for both Onyx and LA Fitness.

And it all makes sense since right around the same time police pulled over 34 year old Dara Howard after she was driving drunk and the wrong down West Columbus Avenue with fresh damage to the front of her car.

It was an accident that lead to a world of trouble for LA Fitness, Onyx and their customers who just wanted to celebrate Mothers Day.

Bancaco says, "It was actually a little more arduous process than it seems we actually had to recover some of the software from our reservation system so we had to log in we had a generator pump up our main computer and pulled the reservations up there and personally called back all 300."

Charles and April Kearse missed their phone call and showed up ready to eat. But when they heard what happened they had to make some new plans.

Charles Kearse says, "It's very unfortunate for this new business because they are going to get hit big time financially on this so that's a concern."

"We were expecting a very big day and a big night and unfortunately things happen and that's life and that's the restaurant business."

Even though it seems to be clear how the fire started police say they are still investigating the incident which caused roughly 100 thousand dollars in damage.

Onyx says they will be open tomorrow and LA Fitness says they should be open hopefully by Thursday.
