Beaumont fire where two firemen injured

By Miranda Grossman

A accidental kitchen disaster left a Feeding Hills couple homeless early Friday morning.

Agawam fire officials say around 6:15 a.m. an electric stove at 80 Pheasant Hill Drive in Feeding Hills caught fire. German Olmo lives in the apartment with his wife. He was making breakfast and accidentally turned on the wrong burner.

"I woke up to go to work this morning, then I put eggs in the pan on the stove. I went to shave, when I heard a pop," said German Olmo.

The fire spread quickly to his entire apartment. But it was contained and did not damage the other units attached to it. Olmo and his wife lost nearly everything, but his family says they were lucky to get out alive and without serious injuries.

"There were flames all over the building, there was smoke coming out, ashes all over the backyard, flowing like snow," said Laura Gonzalez, Olmo's niece.

Gonzalez lives next door to her uncle and saw the whole scene.

"It was scary, really, really scary," adds Gonzalez.

Olmo and his wife lived in the apartment for 30 years and his niece nearly 20 years. That's decades of memories turned into ash and debris.

"There were pictures of us when we were young, when we were kids," said Gonzalez.

No one was seriously injured, but the fire caused about $100,000 in damage.
